Penticton Regional highlights

Every summer, a number of Victoria players make the annual trek to Penticton in quest of some red or gold.

How to live to 100

Check out this video from the Pompano Bridge Club.

And you can also click here for a very interesting story by Paul Hunter which aired on the National last year during the Toronto NABC.

Send both to your non bridge-playing friends. They will be impressed.

Navigating the website on mobile devices

I have made some changes to make the website easier to navigate on mobile devices (smartphones and tablets).

The website uses drop-down menus, which work well on large screens such as home computers. By hovering your mouse on a top menu item, a list of further options drops down allowing you to rapidly arrive at your chosen destination.

With our past theme, this did not work quite as well on smartphones. The new theme I’m currently trying out should make it much easier to navigate the site using a mobile device. When you click on the “Menu” button (using a mobile device) options are clearly marked out.

If you encounter any problems, let me know. Feel free also to send me your comments (both positive and negative) and suggestions at bridgevictoria.unit431@gmail.com

Thanks,

JP Weber,
Webmaster, Unit 431

Record crop of masterpoint achievements in April

Twenty-one Unit 431 members ascended the masterpoint rankings in April.

Complete details can be found (where else?) on our Masterpoint Milestones page under the Members section.

A few highlights:

Ernie Tradewell became a DIamond Life Master (5000 MPs) and is ranked among the top 10 players in our Unit.

Terry Foster simultaneously attained Life Master and Bronze Life Master status. How is this possible? Well, he had accumulated enough points for the latter but was missing a couple of silver points to qualify for Life Master. It’s now a done deal.

In the non-lifemaster categories, there were two new Junior Masters (5 MPs), three Club Masters (20), one Sectional Master (50), eight Regional Masters (100) and two NABC Masters (200). This is very good news for duplicate bridge in the Victoria area as it shows that we have a strong field of newer players who playing regularly and competitively.

Latest news

Several items of interest to Victoria players:

Congratulations to Edmund Patterson who won the March edition of It’s Your Call with a score of 430/500. Detailed results and comments are available on the March Results page

And the April quiz is now available in its usual place.

All players are reminded that the Victoria Sectional is starting this Friday at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. Find complete info here.

We recently learned of the passing of Daphne Dunbar in February. Our In Memoriam page has been updated, and a link to the obituary added.

What’s new for March

Couple of items you might be interested in:

    • Following the election at the AGM, we welcome two new members on the Unit Board, Ann Brydon and Lionel Traverse. You can see the full board, including some cute mug shots, on our Board Members page. If you’re interested in knowing what your Board is up to, check the Board Minutes (under Governance, in the top menu).

    • The Ace of Hearts tournament for players with fewer than 200 masterpoints was held on February 24. See who the winners are on the Tournament Results page. Detailed results are also available.

    • And a reminder that the March It’s Your Call Victoria bidding quiz is now live. It’s a good way to hone your bidding skills and you can play anonymously, avoiding the ignominy and perpetual shame of a poor score (I’m kidding about the last part). Play as many times as you want (only the last entry will count) before March 20 at 9 pm. You probably know by now how to access it (it’s under the Members top menu item) but just to make it easy, click on this link.

And last but not least, here’s an observation and a tip:

In the February quiz, several participants missed out on getting a good score by checking more than one box. You might be considering different bids so please remember to uncheck the no-longer valid boxes. Otherwise, you get a big fat zero for the problem.

Annual General Meeting on February 18

Unit 431’s Annual General Meeting will be held on February 18, 2018 at Victoria Bridge Centre, starting at 12:45 pm. An election will be held to fill vacant positions on the Board of Directors. All Unit members in good standing are eligible to vote.

An Individual Movement (no partner required) duplicate bridge game will follow the AGM. Free coffee and cookies are provided. Free pizza and pop will be served at the conclusion of the game.

Victoria players go up-island in search of silver

Ten Victoria area players traveled up-island to play in the Campbell River New Year Sectional (Jan 12-14).

Some were very successful:

  • Holly Boudreau playing with polymath Margaret Skinner came in first in B and C in the Friday games, giving Holly enough silver for her Life Master!
  • Kirk Homis and Virginia Youens were second overall on Friday.
  • On Saturday, Ernie Tradewell and Daniel Lyder were the overall winners of the 2-session pairs game.
  • Holly and Margaret again got first place overall in B and C in the Saturday events. Damn, these girls are good!

As always, complete results can be found on ACBL Live.

Campbell River is a very friendly place. Everyone appreciated the great hospitality provided by the tournament organizers even if it means being on a diet for the next month or so.

Many of us will surely be back next year.

New Societies Act requires changes to our Unit’s constitution

The Societies Act came into effect November 28, 2016 and governs how societies (not-for-profit corporations) are created and run in BC. The Act includes significant updates to allow for more flexibility in how societies operate, while still protecting the public interest.

In order to comply with the new Societies Act we need to amend our Constitution and Bylaws. Our new Constitution and Bylaws requires approval by a special resolution at our 2018 Annual General Meeting. Below are links to our draft Bylaws & Constitution, with changes highlighted in blue.

We encourage all members to attend the AGM on February 18 to vote on this and other issues.

December Results for It’s Your Call

The December quiz has been compiled and the results are out, just in time for Christmas.

Several players have contributed some very interesting comments explaining their choices of bids. Fascinating reading.
