It’s Your Call Victoria! Announcing the November prize winner

Constant readers will recall that tied for first place with a perfect score of 500 for November were Matt Smith and Bill Van Sickle.

To determine the winner of the free play at Monterey Bridge Club, a public draw was held today, December 6, and won by Matt Smith.

You can win a free game too! If you haven’t yet played the December It’s Your Call Victoria you still have some time left.

The December winner gets a free play at Capital City Bridge Club, courtesy of Ewa Zwicky. Deadline for submission is December 17, so don’t tarry!

You can access the game by clicking here.

It’s Your Call November results now available

We had a great turnout for our first run of It’s Your Call, Victoria!

Fifty-one Unit 431 members participated in this inaugural event. Two participants aced the problems, tying for first place with a perfect score of 500. Read all about it here.

Since ACBL has already published the December problems, I decided to make them available on our website also.  You can find them right here. Deadline for submission is December 17 but you can play anytime starting now.

Calling Victoria Bridge Players !

Most Victoria players are familiar with “It’s Your Call”, the popular bidding quiz found each month in the ACBL Bridge Bulletin. If you’re not, open any recent Bridge Bulletin at page 40 to see what it’s all about.

We’ve set up a local version of the game, which can be played directly from our website, by clicking here: www.bridgevictoria.com/itsyourcall. You can also find it under “Members” in the top menu.

It’s the same game, the only difference being that instead of competing against all of North America, you only play against other ACBL Unit 431 (Victoria and the Gulf Island) players, which greatly improves your chances of winning. And did we mention that the winner gets an actual tangible prize!

The deadline for submission of results is November 18, 2016. You can play as many times as you wish before then, however only the last set of bids you submit will be considered when results are compiled.

Erin Berry Rookie-Master Game

The Erin Berry is the fall Rookie-Master Game. The event is named in memory of Erin Berry, a gifted student and bridge player who was tragically killed in a car accident on January 30, 1998, three days before her 17th birthday.

The games are run using computer hands so that players across the country play the same deals, and printed hand analyses, prepared by top Canadian players, are provided. The pair with the best percentage score in Canada is declared National Winners and receives a trophy. The pairs with the top percentage score in each Zone receive a plaque. All club winners receive certificates.

A “Rookie” is considered to be a player without much experience at playing duplicate bridge. Although we use a masterpoint cut off of 50, we are really intending that the player be fairly new to the game of duplicate bridge. Players that have let their ACBL membership lapse or have not been remitting master points for recording, although below the 50 master point level, do not necessarily fit the definition of “rookie”. Club managers or game directors may prohibit a pair from playing in this game, if they feel that the partnership does not include a player that fits the definition of a “Rookie”.

NEXT ERIN BERRY ROOKIE-MASTER GAME October 18, 2016 at 7:30 pm
Venue:  St Aidan’s Church, 3703 St Aidan’s Street.
Cost is $8.50 for rookies; masters play free!
Director and partnership:  Roy Sadd, 250-812-1615.
At least one member of each partnership must have fewer than 50 master points.

Victoria Fall Sectional starts on Thursday

The tournament begins at 1 pm on Thursday September 8 at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. For full information on the tournament schedule and accommodations, see the flyer.

Opening 1NT with a singleton is now legal

ACBL has recently announced a ruling change which makes it legal to open 1NT with a singleton, but with some restrictions:

“A notrump opening or overcall is natural if, by agreement, it contains no void, at most one singleton which must be the A, K or Q and no more than two doubletons. If the hand contains a singleton, it may have no doubleton.”
