Victoria showered with rubies and sapphires

ACBL continues to tweak the Masterpoint rank categories. It has recently addressed the huge points gap between Silver (1000 MPs) and Gold  (2500 MPs)  as well as between Gold and Diamond (5000 MPs) . Two new categories have been added:

  • Ruby Life Master (1500 MPs) – at least 300 silver, red gold, or platinum points.
  • Sapphire Life Master (3500 MPs) – at least 700 silver, red, gold or platinum, of which at least 350 must be gold or platinum.

As a consequence, 32 Victoria area players are now Ruby Life Masters, and 9 are Sapphire Life Masters. Details can be found on our Masterpoint Milestones page.

Christmas Party Roundup

Unit 431’s Christmas Party was held at Monterey Recreation Centre Saturday December 5 and was as usual well attended. Ele Gibson, President of the Unit, emceed the event, welcoming players, distributing awards and ensuring orderly behaviour at the banquet.

There were 32.5 tables divided into two sections at the game. Kirk Homis & Virginia Youens were the overall winners with an impressive 70.25% score. Complete results are posted on both the VBC and Monterey websites.

Pictures from the event can be found in our photo gallery.

D-light: now every two Fridays at Lakehill

Please note that all D-light games will now be held at Lakehill on the second and fourth Friday of each month.

D-light — a new game to introduce bridge players to duplicate

If you have friends who might like to try duplicate without having to jump in at the deep end, bring them to our new D-light sessions.  All are welcome who have some knowledge of bridge and who want to find out how duplicate works. The games are held every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at Capital City Bridge Club at the Lakehill Lawn Bowling clubhouse at 9:00 am.

The cost per person is $5 and there will be a director there introducing participants to the way duplicate works while they play 15 or more hands. These will NOT be bridge mentoring sessions — they will just allow newcomers to duplicate to ease in. Ideally people will arrive in pairs but for information about finding a partner, please call the club directors.

The club is located at Lakehill Lawn Bowling Club, 3930 LaSalle Street, Saanich. Parking is at the top of Prestwood Drive.

Ewa Zwicky now sole owner/director of Capital City Bridge Club

Capital City Bridge Club is sad to have lost Rita Beny as co-owner and director, where she has worked, together with Ewa, for the past 7 years.

Rita has now decided to go back to where she started her bridge career and to do what she likes best, which is working in the rubber bridge environment. She will be running bridge games and teaching rubber bridge together with her husband, Nev Hircock.

Ewa wishes Rita and Nev all the best in their new venture.

Capital City Bridge Club will no longer have the Monday morning rubber bridge game, but Ewa will continue the duplicate bridge games without any changes to the schedule.
